How to Buy Your First Original Art
- Start with what you notice. Choose the work you keep going back to, not the one you think you should like. Your first piece tells you a lot about what you enjoy.
- Check the size against your wall. Mark the dimensions with painter’s tape before you commit. A 6 x 6 inch painting works on a shelf, a desk, or a gallery wall, and a 12 x 12 inch work can hold a small wall.
- Ask about framing and hanging. Tell us where the piece will go, and we’ll tell you how it’s framed and what it needs to hang.
- Know what you’re buying. An original is made by the artist’s hand and exists only once. A print is a reproduction, usually made in multiples. Every work in this guide is an original, and our archival prints are listed separately.
- Ask us anything. About the artist, the medium, how to care for the work, or how to ship it. Our art advisory service can also help if you’re planning more than one piece.
